What to Eat After Implant Treatment?

Implant treatment is a wonderful step you take to complete missing teeth and improve your quality of life. However, from the moment you leave the operation chair, the secret to success is actually in your hands. The first 72 hours, meaning the first 3 days, are of critical importance for the implant to successfully fuse with the bone (osseointegration).

So, what will you eat when you return home? Will you starve? Absolutely not.

As Ömer Istanbul Dental Polyclinic, we have prepared a detailed nutrition guide that will accelerate your healing process, reduce the risk of pain, and protect your implant.

First 2 Hours After Implant: The Golden Rule

You must not eat anything for the first 2 hours after your treatment is finished. During this time:

  • You should wait for the anesthesia (numbness) to wear off. If you eat while numb, you may bite your cheek or lip and harm yourself.
  • You must continue to bite down tightly on the placed gauze pad for the time specified by your doctor.
  • You can only drink water (but without using a straw!).

First 24 Hours: Cold and Liquid Period

The first day is when the risk of bleeding in the surgical area is highest and clotting begins. Therefore, our keywords are: Cold, Liquid, and Soft.

What Can You Eat?

  • Cold Soups: Cold yogurt soups or lukewarm vegetable soups passed through a blender. (Make sure they are grain-free).
  • Yogurt and Ayran: Contains healing-friendly probiotics.
  • Fruit Juices and Smoothies: Provides energy. (Choose non-acidic fruits, e.g., banana, peach).
  • Custard and Pudding: Should be consumed lukewarm or cold.
  • Ice Cream: Yes, you heard right! Plain, particle-free (no nuts/crunch) ice cream helps reduce swelling (edema) with its cold effect.

Strictly Forbidden (First 24 Hours)

  1. Hot Foods: Tea, coffee, and hot soup can increase bleeding.
  2. Using a Straw: This is very important! Drinking something with a straw creates a vacuum effect in the mouth and can dislodge the blood clot that ensures healing, leading to a painful condition called “Dry Socket.” Drink from a glass or use a spoon.
  3. Smoking and Alcohol: Delays healing and increases the risk of infection.

Days 2 and 3: The Soft Transition Period

You got through the first day, get well soon! On the 2nd and 3rd days, the numbness has completely passed, but the wound site is still sensitive. You can now switch to foods with a “mashed consistency.” Increasing the protein ratio in your diet accelerates wound healing.

Ideal Menu Suggestions

Breakfast:

  • Soft-boiled or scrambled eggs (Omelet should not be overcooked or hard).
  • Peeled tomatoes and soft feta cheese.
  • Inside of the bread (Absolutely do not eat the crusts).

Lunch and Dinner:

  • Mashed potatoes (Lukewarm).
  • Boiled and mashed vegetables (Zucchini, carrots, broccoli).
  • Boneless boiled fish or very well-cooked ground meat dishes.
  • Pasta (Must be very well boiled).

Important Tip: Perform the chewing process on the side where the implant was not made as much as possible. Avoid applying direct pressure on the implant until the stitches are removed.

“Dangerous” Foods You Must Avoid

Until the end of your healing process (average 1 week), the following foods can be the enemy of your implant:

  1. Hard and Shelled Foods: Hazelnuts, peanuts, walnuts, roasted chickpeas, hard apples, quince.
  2. Grainy Foods: Sesame, nigella seeds, rice, strawberries, kiwi. (These small grains can get between the stitches and cause infection).
  3. Sticky Foods: Gum, Turkish delight, caramel chocolates. (Can dislodge your temporary prostheses).
  4. Spicy and Hot Foods: Can irritate the wound area and create a burning sensation.

Common Mistakes in Post-Implant Nutrition

  • Switching to hard foods too early
  • Consuming hot tea and coffee
  • Using a straw
  • Consuming spicy and acidic foods
  • Returning to alcohol and cigarettes early

These mistakes can seriously increase the risk of complications around the implant.

Why Is Post-Implant Nutrition So Important?

Following implant surgery, controlled surgical trauma occurs in the jawbone and gum tissue. After the procedure, for this area to heal healthily, it is necessary to:

  • Protect the blood clot
  • Ensure stitches are not damaged
  • Reduce the risk of infection
  • Keep swelling and pain to a minimum

Wrong eating habits can negatively affect this process, increasing the risk of inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis) and implant loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I eat after an implant?

After implant treatment, you can eat once the effect of the anesthesia has completely worn off. This time is usually between 2–3 hours. The first meal must be lukewarm or cold, liquid or mashed consistency. Eating before the anesthesia wears off can cause injuries inside the mouth.

What should be eaten on the first day after an implant?

On the first day, foods that do not require chewing and do not irritate the mouth should be preferred. Yogurt, vegetable purees, lukewarm soups, fruit purees, and protein drinks can be consumed safely. Hot, hard, and grainy foods must strictly be avoided.

When can chewing be done after an implant?

Chewing on the side where the implant is located is not recommended for the first 3 days. Chewing should be done using the opposite side and limited to soft foods. You should wait for your dentist’s approval to chew hard foods.

Can soup be consumed after an implant?

Yes, soup can be consumed after an implant. However, the soup needs to be not too hot and not have a grainy or chunky texture. Creamy or pureed soups are the best options for the first few days.

When can coffee and tea be drunk after an implant?

Hot tea and coffee should be avoided for the first 48 hours. Hot drinks increase blood circulation, which can trigger bleeding and swelling. After the third day, they can be consumed lukewarm and in moderation.

Conclusion: Patience is the Key to a Beautiful Smile

The first 3 days after implant treatment may seem a bit challenging, but this short-term diet lays the foundation for solid teeth you will use for a lifetime. As Ömer İstanbul, we are with you at every stage of your treatment.
